Licensing FAQ

How can I use content from your website?
Unless otherwise stated, all content on this website is published under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0) License.

Why have you chosen this license?

We are big fans of open data which underpins a lot of our work.  This license allows people to take our work and build on it with the condition that they let people know they are using our content and also make any derived products available for reuse.

All of our work is aimed at accelerating and supporting the transition to Electric Vehicles and we would be delighted to see it being re-used by individuals and organisations who have the same goals.

If your intended use of our content is for commercial purposes and/or to use it in a context where you want to keep it proprietary then this license does not allow you to do this. You may still be able to use it for commercial and/or proprietary purposes but only if you have applied for and been granted a different kind of license by us.

How do you define ‘commercial’?

The short version is that “NonCommercial means not primarily intended for or directed towards commercial advantage or monetary compensation.”

There is a comprehensive explanation of the intended interpretation of the Non-Commercial restriction on the Creative Commons wiki

The best way to approach this is ‘if in doubt, ask!’ If you are not sure whether your intended use qualifies as non-commercial then please get in touch to discuss it with us by filling in the form at the foot of this FAQ.

Why are you restricting commercial use of your content?

We recognise that content cannot be considered as truly open data when this restriction is in place but we think it is the correct solution for our particular organisation.

We are a Community Interest Company (CIC) that is able to operate as a commercial entity but in pursuit of a public interest purpose rather than profit for shareholders (of which we have none).

We are very happy for other similar organisations (NGOs, charities, CICs, etc.) to take and use our content without any monetary compensation.

Where someone is going to generate income  for themselves (whether directly or indirectly) through the use of our content then we think it is reasonable to expect them to make a contribution to our company in return for the work we have done.

Any income we receive is reinvested in our organisation and helps us to to do more work advancing the transition to Electric Vehicles as part of a societal effort to combat climate change.

What kinds of commercial services might use your content?

We expect our content may be useful to businesses providing services related to the EV transition.

These might include analysts who offer their clients market insights for a fee as well as companies that are directly offering services like chargepoints, insurance, finance etc.

What are the fee levels?

We look at each request for our content on a case by case basis to establish what would be a fair charge based on the intended use case.

If you are interested in obtaining a license for commercial and/or proprietary use of our content please get in touch filling in the form at the foot of this FAQ.

Please include information about your organisation and as much detail as possible about the intended use of the content.  We will treat all requests in confidence.

How should I include an attribution?

Our preference is for you to include a reference to the specific content and a link to the relevant page on our website.   Eg ‘includes content from New AutoMotive’s Electric Car Count

We recognise that space can be limited in some display formats and a simple reference to ‘© New AutoMotive’ with a link to a fuller copyright statement would also be acceptable in these cases.
